ESPN Sees Ratings, Viewership Increases Over '08 For Jets-Dolphins

Jets-Dolphins "MNF" Game Ranks As
Fifth-Most Viewed Program On Cable In '09
ESPN earned a 9.7 cable rating and 13.137 million viewers for Jets-Dolphins "MNF," up 16.9% and 19.7%, respectively, from an 8.3 rating and 10.975 million viewers for the comparable Vikings-Saints game last year. The game ranks as the fifth-most viewed program on cable in '09. It also was the highest-rated broadcast or cable program on Monday night in adults 18-34 and 18-49 and in all key male demos. The game also helped ESPN win the night among all networks in all key adult and male demos. Through six games, ESPN's "MNF" is averaging an 11.1 cable rating and 15.254 million viewers, up 18% and 21%, respectively, over the same period last year. Meanwhile, ESPN.com drew nearly 100 million page views to its NFL content accessed via computers and mobile devices for Monday through Tuesday at noon ET, up 38% from the comparable period last year. ESPN.com also streamed 3.2 million NFL-related videos during the time period, up 77% from last year (THE DAILY).

WEEK IN REVIEW: DAILY VARIETY's Rick Kissell reports CBS "scored an easy victory in demos last week," getting a "weekend boost from football." The net averaged a 3.3 rating in adults 18-49 for the week ending Sunday, followed by NBC and Fox (both 2.6), ABC (2.5), TBS (1.9) and ESPN (1.6). CBS "got a big lift from football," starting with a 3.6 rating in adults 18-49 for Saturday night's Florida-LSU college football game. CBS also "benefited from a 43-minute NFL overrun on Sunday," as the network earned a 9.0 rating in the demo for the conclusion of Patriots-Broncos, which went into overtime. ESPN's Packers-Vikings "MNF" on October 4 ranked as the top-rated program last week with a 9.1 rating in adults 18-49 (DAILY VARIETY, 10/4). Meanwhile, DAILY VARIETY's Kissell yesterday reported NBC's Colts-Titans "SNF," which "figures to be one of the lowest-rated 'Sunday Night Football' games of the season," still was "enough to carry NBC to victory" for the night in adults 18-49. CBS was the second-highest rated network in the demo for the night "thanks to" the Patriots-Broncos overrun (DAILY VARIETY, 10/13).

Kraft Says NFL's Ratings Through
First Five Weeks Have Been Amazing
SIGN OF THE TIMES: In Boston, Karen Guregian reports Patriots Owner Robert Kraft yesterday at the NFL owners meetings in Boston spoke about the "incredible ratings the NFL received through the first five weeks." Kraft: "It's been amazing to me. If we look at the ratings, it's just been remarkable. There's a change in the culture of the American public. They're staying home more. They're doing more family entertainment" (BOSTON HERALD, 10/14).

SEEING RED: SI.com's Peter King wrote, "I know what I'd do if I didn't have a job covering the NFL on Sundays: I'd veg out, man-cave style, and watch the Red Zone Channel. ... If you're a fan of the league, or if your team has a bye or is playing at night, it's an interesting way to digest the games. ... For the $7 or so a month it costs, it's money I'd spend" (SI.com, 10/13). SI.com's Richard Deitsch wrote RedZone Channel hosts Scott Hanson (NFL Network) and Andrew Siciliano (DirecTV) "guide viewers ably, though Siciliano is allowed to show more snark and personality on his version." Deitsch: "Are the channels worth the extra cost? Depends how much you love football and an assortment of graphics featuring red-zone percentages" (SI.com, 10/13).
