WNBA Fever Announce Team Will Continue Playing In Indy In 2010

Fever's Attendance Numbers
Rose By About 3% This Year
The WNBA Fever yesterday announced that they "will return for another summer," ending speculation that Owner Herb Simon "would shut down the team because of financial losses," according to David Woods of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. A letter signed by Simon, Pacers Sports & Entertainment President Jim Morris and Fever COO Kelly Krauskopf read in part, "We are committed to the future success of this franchise in Indianapolis. We look forward to another great season in 2010 and for many years to come." The Fever this year reached the WNBA Finals for the first time, and Woods notes the team had their "best regular-season record" at 22-12. Fever attendance this season averaged 7,939, sixth out of the 13 WNBA teams and about a 3% "increase over last year." The team had "three sellouts of 18,165-seat Conseco Fieldhouse during the playoffs," setting a league record for average playoff attendance. However, Pacers President Larry Bird "purchased all balcony seats for free distribution" for Game Three of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Shock (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 10/14).

STORM FRONT: In Washington, Greg Lamm reports the WNBA Storm is "beefing up its ticket sales staff and looking for a sponsor to slap its name on the uniforms." Storm CEO Karen Bryant said that the team is "looking for a sponsor with a national presence and a strong local tie." The team also is "looking to sign new radio and TV broadcast deals this year." The team saw attendance drop nearly 5% in '09, and Storm co-Owner Dawn Trudeau said, "We certainly had expected to do better." The team has "yet to reach profitability as a stand-alone enterprise" since the Sonics left in '08, but Trudeau said that the team's owners are "pleased with the Storm's progress and are committed to a long-term investment in the team." Lamm notes the team has a business office staff of "about 30 and is adding four people to its sales force, bringing the number to 10" (PUGET SOUND BUSINESS JOURNAL, 10/9 issue).
