Foss Says Sponsors Onboard With IOC's
Plans To Overhaul Marketing Services |
The IOC "plans to overhaul its marketing services group by closing its Atlanta office, centralizing operations in Switzerland and developing a new system for working with worldwide sponsors," according to Tripp Mickle of SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. The planned changes "follow a routine evaluation conducted after the Beijing Games and a lengthy analysis by an outside consulting firm." The changes also come "after the IOC received a 12-page letter from TOP sponsors criticizing the effectiveness of the organization's marketing services division, particularly in regard to the challenges of the Beijing Games." The "biggest change is the closure in May 2010 of the Atlanta office, which was established in 2002, has a dozen employees and serves as the IOC's primary sales and servicing division." All IOC marketing operations and employees "will be relocated" to the organization's HQs in Lausanne, Switzerland. Offers have "already been extended to existing employees in Atlanta" (SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL, 10/12 issue). Peter Foss, GE's President of Olympic Sponsorship & Corporate Sales, said that the IOC's plans to hire more people and work more closely with partners was received positively by TOP sponsorship execs. "They made a real honest effort at it and came back with real honest information," Foss said. "They said, 'Look we're listening and we want to see what your goals are.' Around the table everyone was very appreciative of the effort." Sponsor execs at Coca-Cola and Visa declined to comment (Mickle).
