Blazers To Stream Games Online, Permitted Via New NBA Policy

Trail Blazers Games To Be
Streamed On Blazers.com
Trail Blazers President Larry Miller last night confirmed that "all Blazers games that are set to broadcast" on KGW-NBC also will be streamed on Blazers.com, effective immediately, according to Benjamin Golliver of BLAZERSEDGE.com. Miller noted that the Blazers are working with CSN Northwest to "stream games televised on the channel as well and that the Blazers are 'committed to ... streaming (all Comcast) games online'" by the end of '09 (BLAZERSEDGE.com, 10/12). Miller said that there "will be a cost involved" for viewing the games online. In Portland, Sean Meagher wrote this is a "step in the right direction for bringing Blazers games to those without the option of Comcast" (OREGONLIVE.com, 10/12).

LATEST IN A TREND: MULTICHANNEL NEWS' R. Thomas Umstead notes several RSNs across the country are "shooting around the prospect of streaming live league games on the Web" after the NBA last year granted regional nets the "ability to stream local telecasts." CSN Philadelphia "may have in place plans to offer a fee-based package" of live 76ers games by the start of the season. Sources indicated that Comcast is "looking to stream live games over the Web for as many as two to three of the seven NBA teams that have television deals" with the MSO. None of the 16 Fox Sports RSNs "with NBA rights plan to launch a streaming service by the launch of the league's regular season," although FSN VP/PR Chris Bellitti said that the company "hasn't ruled out the potential for some experimentation later in the year" (MULTICHANNEL NEWS, 10/12 issue). The topic was first reported in the September 28 issue of SportsBusiness Journal.
