D'Backs' Kendrick Says Club's Payroll In For Modest Increase

Kendrick Says D'Backs Still
Willing To Sustain Some Losses
D’Backs Managing General Partner Ken Kendrick "believes there is reason to be hopeful about the Diamondbacks in 2010, but acknowledges his team's shortcomings allow room for skepticism," according to Nick Piecoro of the ARIZONA REPUBLIC. Kendrick "sounded committed to addressing those shortcomings with a payroll that he said would modestly increase next season despite the club operating in the red for a second consecutive year." Piecoro notes attendance fell 15.2% this season, "bringing a somewhat anticipated loss in revenue." Kendrick said that "after a 'very slight loss' in 2008, the club suffered a greater but still 'modest loss' this season." Kendrick: "We're willing to sustain some losses. In this economy and this market, we do need to put a club on the field that performs better than this year's club. ... We are a baseball team and winning is important. So we are willing to make some investment to give our baseball department, [GM Josh Byrnes] and his guys, more maneuverability to improve the product." Kendrick "cautioned that the increase in payroll won't be extreme," but this season's $73M payroll "likely will jump" to the $75-79M range (ARIZONA REPUBLIC, 10/9).
