Ford Field Frozen Four Capacity Limited To 36,000 After Rink Move

The NCAA Thursday announced that for the '10 Frozen Four, the rink at Ford Field will be moved "from the 50-yard line -- where the court was for last spring's Final Four -- to the west end zone," limiting seating capacity to 36,000, according to George Sipple of the DETROIT FREE PRESS. Even with the smaller capacity, the games are expected to "break Frozen Four attendance records." The NCAA said that "maximizing sight lines -- an issue for some fans during the Final Four -- and trying to sell three times more tickets than a typical Frozen Four were the biggest factors in moving the rink." When tickets went on sale in April, organizers "still were aiming to top 60,000," and about 22,000 tickets "have been sold seven months before the Frozen Four." The NCAA said that fans who had purchased tickets through Ticketmaster "would be relocated to comparable seats in the new configuration and each relocated fan would receive a commemorative ticket" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 10/9). USCHO.com's Todd Milewski wrote "less-than-desired ticket sales likely factored into the equation" to relocate the rink (USCHO.com, 10/8). COLLEGE HOCKEY NEWS' Adam Wodon wrote give the NCAA "credit for this" because the organization "recognized the issue early enough, and now can correct it." It is "better to do this now, than to show up in April and play in front of a cavernous half-empty stadium." That would be "far more embarrassing" (COLLEGEHOCKEYNEWS.com, 10/8).
