New Dodge Head Says Brand Will Maintain NASCAR Commitment

Gilles Says Change In Leadership Will
Not Impact Dodge's Interest In NASCAR
New Dodge President & CEO Ralph Gilles yesterday in a statement said that the "change in leadership over the Dodge brand will not impact Dodge's interest in NASCAR," according to Bob Pockrass of NASCAR SCENE. Former Dodge President & CEO Mike Accavitti "resigned amid a Chrysler restructuring," but Gilles said Dodge "intends to remain involved in NASCAR competition." Gilles: "Our brand-focused strategy for development and marketing of Dodge vehicles through the sport remains a good fit for the company." Pockrass noted Dodge "only has one organization -- Penske Racing -- signed for the 2010 season since Richard Petty Motorsports plans to move to Ford" (SCENEDAILY.com, 10/6).

SHINING LIGHT: In Daytona Beach, Godwin Kelly noted GM and Chevrolet "captured NASCAR's coveted manufacturers' championship" following Sunday's Sprint Cup Series Price Chopper 400 at Kansas Speedway. The title was "good news for GM, which recently went through bankruptcy proceedings." Chevrolet VP/Global Operations Brent Dewar: "This award is exceptionally gratifying for everyone at Chevrolet and GM, especially in this challenging economic environment. We salute our Chevy teams, owners, and drivers for all their hard work and dedication in achieving this exceptional recognition" (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 10/6).

HERE TO STAY: AUTOSPORT.com's Jonathan Noble reported Toyota Racing President John Howett has "rubbished suggestions" that the company's F1 team's "future in the sport is in doubt, despite reports ... claiming that the team could withdraw at the end of the season." Though the auto manufacturer is "waiting for a Toyota Motor Company board meeting on November 15 to have its 2010 budget signed off, Howett has made it clear" comments from Toyota F1 team Principal Tadashi Yamashina, "claiming that its participation next year could not be guaranteed, were taken out of context." Noble noted Toyota also is "keen to continue supplying engines to a customer team in F1 next year, with its current partnership with Williams coming to end" (AUTOSPORT.com, 10/2).
