Kings Reaching Out To Community After
Ranking Last In Attendance Last Season |
Reaching out to the community "has never been as important as it is now" for the NBA Kings, as the team "ranked last in the NBA in attendance last season while finishing with the worst record in franchise history," according to Sam Amick of the SACRAMENTO BEE. Kings F Jon Brockman: "We're trying to get out and meet people and make it a special experience coming to the Kings' games, not having that wall up between the fans and the players." New Kings coach Paul Westphal "clearly has embraced the state of the organization, agreeing to participate in the endless appearances and media interviews he is asked to conduct," and the players have "turned a corner, too, with the young core of players willing to double as salesmen whenever asked." Amick noted the Kings this season "will not air any exhibition games because of financial constraints," and the production "will be limited in the regular season." There will be "no pre- or postgame shows," and "no Kings games will air on [KXTV-ABC] for the first time since 2002." Kings VP/Business Communications Mitch Germann "declined to reveal specific season-ticket figures," but he said that the "mid-September renewals and new sales were 'trailing slightly' from the previous year." Germann projected that "by the time the regular season arrives, the new sales will be higher, and renewals -- as he said is the case across the league -- will be lower." Meanwhile, Amick noted "about 4,500 people showed up" Saturday at Arco Arena for a "free scrimmage that was open to the public" (SACRAMENTO BEE, 10/4).
GOOD SEATS STILL AVAILABLE: Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban said the team still has a "couple thousand" tickets remaining for the October 27 opener against the Wizards, which has "never happened." Cuban: "People just think you can't get tickets because it's been sold out for so long. You just got to get the word out." But Cuban added, "We're a lot better off than most teams, unless you're in a huge market like LA or New York or have been in the Finals like Boston, Orlando or Cleveland. Other than that, everybody's struggling a little bit. ... I think we're getting hurt a little by the Cowboys, too. A lot of people spent a lot of money on those tickets." Cuban offered "free tickets" for yesterday's preseason opener against the Magic at American Airlines Center "to anybody who asked for them within one hour of tip-off" (DALLAS MORNING NEWS, 10/6).
