The NCAA yesterday announced that it will host a tribute for late President MYLES BRAND, in conjunction with Indiana Univ. (IU), at Conseco Fieldhouse on October 28 at 6:00pm ET. The event will include guest speakers, video tributes and artistic performances. The NCAA and IU are offering Brand's friends, family and colleagues the opportunity to pay tribute to Brand, who passed away earlier this month, at the event (THE DAILY).

Allen Says He Is "Fine" After
Undergoing Heart Surgery This Summer
ON THE REBOUND: Blazers and Seahawks Owner PAUL ALLEN yesterday said he is "fine" after undergoing heart surgery this summer. Allen: "I'm much, much better. I hit a few bumps in the road. Your health ... is the most important thing in the world, isn't it?" In Portland, John Canzano writes, "He's talking like a guy who understands the stakes, now. And maybe we're witnessing the evolution of a man." When asked why he owns sports teams, Allen said, "I get to be a fan. I get to see what's going on behind the scenes. I get to take an active role. It's fun" (Portland OREGONIAN, 9/30).

STARS ON ICE: The Royal Canadian Mint yesterday unveiled a new 25-cent coin in honor of Canada's '02 Gold Medal-winning hockey team. Up to 22 million of the commemorative coins will be launched into circulation as part of a Vancouver 2010 collection, and three million of those are "featured in colour, randomly inserted into coin rolls" (OTTAWA CITIZEN, 9/30)....Red Wings D NICKLAS LIDSTROM yesterday was named the Ambassador of Honor by his home county of Dalarna in Sweden (DETROIT NEWS, 9/30)....The CBC's DON CHERRY will be a judge on the net's new "Battle of the Blades" reality ice dancing competition, which begins Sunday (CP, 9/29).

 
BOOK SHELF: Baseball HOFers BOB GIBSON and REGGIE JACKSON, in collaboration with author LONNIE WHEELER, have written a new book, "SIXTY FEET, SIX INCHES: A HALL OF FAME PITCHER & A HALL OF FAME HITTER TALK ABOUT HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED." Gibson and Jackson in the book "describe the old days, when pitchers often lasted nine innings and batters understood the subtle difference between a knockdown pitch and a brushback" (N.Y. TIMES, 9/30)....In N.Y., Mike Vaccaro wrote if there is "a part of you that bleeds for the Fighting Irish, do yourself a favor" and read JIM DENT's new book, "RESURRECTION," about former Notre Dame football coach ARA PARSEGHIAN's first year at the school (N.Y. POST, 9/27).

NAMES: Retired boxer OSCAR DE LA HOYA last night received the Hispanic Heritage Award for Achievement in Sports (Golden Boy Promotions)....Sports Media Canada has named Globe & Mail sports reporters PAUL WALDIE and DAVID SHOALTS as its writers of the year (THE DAILY)....The Eagles and Phillies, in collaboration with Philadelphia's Rock & Wrap It Up, collect unused food from Citizens Bank Park and Lincoln Financial Field after games and donate it to the Philadelphia Brotherhood Rescue Mission. The food is "served that day or the following day to the 80 or so men who live there," and whatever is not consumed is "set on tables on the sidewalk for people in the community" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 9/30)....The Packers will donate $25,000 to the new Brown County Community Treatment Center to "cover the cost of artwork" from artist SCOTT MENZEL, as well as "several televisions and other equipment for the center" (GREEN BAY PRESS-GAZETTE, 9/30).
