With Big Spenders Playoff-Bound, Are Changes Needed In MLB?

Playoff-Bound Angels, Yankees Among
Top Spenders In MLB This Season
Money "doesn't buy everything," but this year it "almost seems to be good for a free pass" to the MLB playoffs, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com. Six potential playoff teams are "among baseball's top eight spenders," and "never has payroll been such a determinative factor in making the playoffs." But MLB Commissioner Bud Selig said he is "fairly satisfied this year is an aberration." Selig: "I still think the basic tenets we have in place will lead to the best competitive balance we've ever had." Luxury taxes and revenue sharing "have helped balance the playing field for a decade and a half, and Selig readily points to the fact that half the teams have made the postseason within the last half decade." Heyman noted a "couple owners have mentioned the issue of payroll imbalance in recent interviews, but there's been nothing that points to any strong movement toward a salary cap or anything as drastic as that" (SI.com, 9/28).

TIME FOR A CHANGE: The L.A. Times' Bill Plaschke said of big spenders dominating MLB's postseason berths this year, "You tell me there's not revenue disparity in baseball? You tell me the rich don't get richer? You tell me it's fair? It's not fair, and baseball needs to really make changes here because it does ruin the season. No. 1, they need to have better revenue sharing, and No. 2, they need to have a draft that extends to Latin America" ("Around The Horn," ESPN, 9/28).
