NBC Sees Final "SNF" Rating Down 20% For Colts' Romp Over Cards

NBC Earns 10.7 Final Nielsen Rating And 17.5
Million Viewers For Colts-Cardinals Game
NBC earned a 10.7 final Nielsen rating and 17.5 million viewers for its “SNF” telecast of Colts-Cardinals, which is off 20% and 21%, respectively, from a 13.3 rating and 22.2 million viewers for the comparable Cowboys-Packers game last year. The game propelled NBC to a primetime Sunday win in total viewers, adults 18-34, 18-49 and 25-54 and all key adult-male demos despite airing against several season premieres on ABC, CBS and Fox. For the season, “SNF” is averaging a 12.9 rating and 21.3 million viewers, up 17% and 19%, respectively, from an 11.0 rating and 17.9 million viewers through the same point last season (THE DAILY). DAILY VARIETY's Rick Kissell reports viewership "likely tapered off in the final quarter" of the Colts' 31-10 win (DAILY VARIETY, 9/29). With Colts-Cardinals being down as much as it was compared to Cowboys-Packers, USA TODAY's Michael Hiestand notes, "After making last season's Super Bowl, the Cardinals on NBC prime time looked good on paper." The NFL on the whole "drew an overnight ratings increase in only one of its four time slots Sunday" -- Fox' early-window slot featuring the "less-than-suspenseful" Falcons-Patriots game. Meanwhile, the 12.6 overnight ratings CBS earned for its late-window coverage featuring Steelers-Bengals shows the Bengals "might be playing themselves into a TV draw ... after starring in HBO's 'Hard Knocks'" (USA TODAY, 9/29).

JET PROPELLED: On Long Island, Neil Best notes though the Jets on Sunday played at the same time as the "traditionally more popular Giants for the first time since 1984," they "played a close game against the Titans that kept viewers interested" and earned a 10.7 local rating in N.Y. on WCBS-TV. The Giants-Buccaneers game on WNYW-Fox earned a 9.7 local rating. Best writes the Jets rating was "another illustration of the obvious: the fever for Gang Green is spreading, and infectious." Meanwhile, ESPN's afternoon broadcast of the rain-delayed Red Sox-Yankees game earned a 5.0, while the 1:00pm broadcast of Mets-Marlins on WPIX-CW earned a 1.3 (NEWSDAY, 9/29). In N.Y., Richard Sandomir notes the Giants game "produced mostly higher ratings than the Jets game did until" 3:00pm ET. The Jets game "peaked at a 15.1" from 3:45-4:00pm, while the "peak rating for the Giants game, a 12.1, came between" 2:30-2:45pm (N.Y. TIMES, 9/29).
