Danica Signs Three-Year Extension With Andretti Green Racing

Patrick's Deal Is Expected To Be Announced
Soon, Perhaps At Homestead-Miami Race
IRL driver Danica Patrick has signed a three-year contract extension to remain with Andretti Green Racing (AGR) and "will continue to drive the No. 7 car with a Motorola-based sponsorship," according to Curt Cavin of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. It is "believed she has not resolved her options for driving a stock car in the future." Meanwhile, Patrick's signing "could be followed by more good news for the IndyCar Series." IRL Commercial Division President Terry Angstadt Thursday said that the series is "close to signing a title sponsor for 2010 and beyond." IRL officials "have been talking" with Phillips-Van Heusen, which owns IndyCar sponsor Izod (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 9/25). SI.com's Bruce Martin notes Patrick's signing "will be officially announced at a later time, presumably around the IndyCar Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Oct. 10." With Patrick remaining in IndyCar, the series "can breathe a sigh of relief." While Patrick's new deal "will allow her to compete in a limited number of NASCAR lower division races, such as ARCA, Camping World Truck Series and Nationwide Series, she has not committed to anything." She "could be in line to run with either Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Hendrick Motorsports as part of the JR Motorsports Nationwide Series entry, which is sponsored by GoDaddy.com -- one of Patrick's major backers" (SI.com, 9/25). YAHOO SPORTS' Jay Busbee writes, "Regardless of what Patrick decides about NASCAR, the three-year agreement with Andretti Green seems to indicate that she's not going to completely jump ship from Indy. It's a wise move, considering how many open-wheel drivers have challenged NASCAR and fallen short" (SPORTS.YAHOO.com, 9/25).
