Interest In Acquiring Rangers |
Houston-based freight-forwarding company Crane Worldwide Logistics Founder Jim Crane, Curve Baseball LP President & Managing Partner Chuck Greenberg and White Sox Special Assistant to the Chair and former MLB agent Dennis Gilbert are all "potential buyers" of the MLB Rangers, according to sources cited by Ben Klayman of REUTERS. Gilbert confirmed through the White Sox that he is "bidding for the Rangers but declined further comment," while Crane "could not be reached and Greenberg declined to comment." A source said identifying a winner "should occur before year end." The sources added that the three groups are "doing their due diligence, studying the team's financial data." Klayman noted Greenberg, whose company owns two Minor League Baseball teams, "helped negotiate" the deal that saw Penguins Owner Mario Lemieux purchase the hockey club in '99, while Gilbert's "sports agency once represented" former MLBer Barry Bonds. Meanwhile, a source said that a group that had "eyed a bid for the Rangers but dropped out was led by" IBAF President Harvey Schiller (REUTERS, 9/23).
