Earthquakes Unveil Design Plans For Proposed 15,000-Seat Stadium

Earthquakes' Proposed San Jose Stadium Would
Feature European-Style Roof, HD Video Board
MLS Earthquakes Owner Lew Wolff Saturday unveiled design plans for the team's proposed new San Jose stadium, which would feature a European-style roof that keeps sound inside the bowl and a state-of-the-art HD video board (Earthquakes). Wolff said that he "rejected the idea to include luxury boxes and other amenities because soccer fans come to watch games more than experience a newfangled facility." In San Jose, Almond & Seipel reported the 15,000-seat, $60M stadium would be "privately financed." The renderings, via K.C.-based 360 Architecture, "offer only conceptual impressions because the team has yet to secure funds to move forward." Wolff: "It is one more step, not a guarantee we will be there." Almond & Seipel note the team's plans to "open the stadium by 2012 have been derailed because of the economic downturn." Wolff "declined to predict when the project would be completed, saying it would take about two years from the moment they start." Meanwhile, in an effort to "soften the blow of not breaking ground as promised," the team announced that it will "cut ticket prices by as much as 40[%] for next season." Earthquakes Exec VP/Business Operations David Alioto said that the team "wants to show fans it is serious about keeping soccer in San Jose" (SAN JOSE MERCURY NEWS, 9/20).
