Longtime Bruins Broadcaster Fred Cusick Passes Away At 90

Cusick Largely Responsible For Getting
Bruins' Games On TV In The '60s
Former Bruins broadcaster FRED CUSICK, who called games for 44 years until '97, died yesterday at the age of 90, according to Stephen Harris of the BOSTON HERALD. Cusick was the "first U.S. broadcaster inducted" into the Hockey HOF, and his son TED yesterday said that while "his dad covered many sports, including the Red Sox and Patriots, the Bruins were his foremost love." Cusick was "largely responsible for first getting the B's games" on TV in the '60s when the team "finished sixth in the six-team NHL and local stations weren't very interested" (BOSTON HERALD, 9/16). In Boston, Bryan Marquard notes Cusick "brought radio listeners and television viewers onto the ice," and was "famous for stretching out the word score until it seemed as if it had as many vowels as there were players." He called the Bruins' last game "at the old Boston Garden and the Patriots' first football game." WBZ-AM Bruins announcer Dave Goucher said, "The thing you remember about him was his style. He wasn't someone who yelled and screamed for the whole game" (BOSTON GLOBE, 9/16). Cusick called the Bruins' Stanley Cup victory in '70, "one of the city's most famous sports moments." Former Bruins GM HARRY SINDEN in a statement said, "He was a pioneer and the way hockey games are broadcast really originated with Fred. A lot of the camera work that they use was at his suggestion. He had a number of ideas that he brought in and they still use" (AP, 9/16). In Massachusetts, Dick Trust writes Cusick will "be remembered, too, as a gentleman, elegant in many ways, helpful to young reporters, and witty" (PATRIOT LEDGER, 9/16). ESPN's Bill Simmons on Twitter wrote, "RIP, Fred Cusick. My favorite Boston sports announcer by a landslide. Made every Bruins game 33% better" (TWITTER.com, 9/15).
