Chelsea Banned From Signings During Next Two Transfer Windows

Chelsea Sanctioned For Getting Gael
Kakuta To Break Lens Contract
EPL club Chelsea will be "unable to buy any players" during the next two transfer windows after being "found guilty by FIFA of inducing" MF Gael Kakuta to break his contract with French club Lens in '07, according to Hughes & Dickinson of the LONDON TIMES. Chelsea must also pay Lens $185,000 (all figures US) "'training compensation' for Kakuta, who has been suspended for four months." Kakuta was ordered to pay $1.12M, and FIFA said that Chelsea are "jointly liable" for that amount. Chelsea Thursday said that they will "argue that the punishment is disproportionate to the relatively modest fine imposed and the nature of the offence, while senior figures at the club -- who have maintained their innocence -- believe that they are victims of an anti-English conspiracy at the heart of FIFA and UEFA." If FIFA does not overturn the ban, Chelsea "pledged to mount 'the strongest appeal possible' and will take their case" to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland. The club in a statement said the sanctions are "without precedent to this level and totally disproportionate to the alleged offence and the financial penalty imposed" (LONDON TIMES, 9/4). Attorney Adam Morallee said that any Chelsea appeal is "likely to be fast-tracked through the system." In London, Russell Kempson notes that would "render useless possible attempts by the West London club to delay the process, having the ban 'frozen' by the Court of Arbitration for Sport and thereby enabling them to buy players in January and perhaps during the summer as well" (LONDON TIMES, 9/4).

MANU BAN TO FOLLOW? In London, Matt Dickinson reports Manchester United could also "be hit by a transfer ban" after French club Le Havre confirmed that they are "pursuing a 'very similar' case to that won by Lens against Chelsea." Le Havre insists that ManU MF Paul Pogba was "under contract to them when he left for United this summer," and the club claims to "have evidence that inducements were offered to Pogba's parents and say that details will be included in their submission to FIFA" (LONDON TIMES, 9/4). But a ManU spokesperson said the allegations are "complete nonsense," adding "everything has been done within UEFA guidelines" (Manchester GUARDIAN, 9/4).

MAKING A STAND: In London, James Lawton writes the transfer ban can be "seen as a significant move towards cleaning up a market in youth players that has been increasingly shaped by the ruthless behaviour of the most powerful clubs" (London INDEPENDENT, 9/4). Also in London, Patrick Barclay writes FIFA's "determination to make contracts mean something, especially in relation to young players and the clubs who spend time and money developing them, is now clear and that can only be helpful, especially if it is followed by a new formula guaranteeing a player's original club suitable compensation for having educated him." The ban could be an "important factor in creating a more level playing field across the game, as UEFA says it wants to do" (LONDON TIMES, 9/4).
