IMG's 10-Year Contract To Run Indian Premier League Terminated

The Indian Premier League's (IPL) future "has been thrown into doubt after it was announced" the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has "ripped up a 10-year contract with IMG," according to Nick Hoult of the London TELEGRAPH. IMG "played a vital role in turning the Twenty20 league into a global cricketing force," as it "ran almost every aspect of the IPL from the legal framework of commercial and television deals as well as player contracts." IMG also organized the league's annual player auction and "managed match-day affairs." But Hoult notes IMG fell "victim to a political battle within" the BCCI. IMG reportedly is "entitled to a 10[%] cut of the BCCI's revenue from the IPL and may consider legal action to protect their interest." The decision to drop IMG "over their costs has led to concerns over the future running of the tournament which has been a huge success since" its first season in '08 (London TELEGRAPH, 8/31). In India, Indranil Basu reports IPL franchises are "up in arms against" the BCCI's decision to terminate the IMG contract. Several franchise owners "have thrown their weight behind IMG and protested at not being consulted on the decision by shooting off letters" to BCCI President Shashank Manohar, former BCCI President Sharad Pawar and IPL Commissioner Lalit Modi. As a result, the IPL's governing council "will now meet on September 2 in Mumbai to take a fresh call on the issue and how it can avoid a legal wrangle." Mumbai Indians Owner Mukesh Ambani said it is "worrying" to him that "such a significant decision in relation to IPL has been taken without even so much as consulting the franchises" (TIMES OF INDIA, 8/31).
