What's MLS Galaxy President Tom Payne Up To This Weekend?

Tom Payne Enjoys Going To The
Movies On Friday Nights
Ever wonder how executives in sports business spend their weekends? THE DAILY this week continues our new feature, "What's Up For The Weekend?," which provides readers with an inside-look at people in our industry. Today, we catch up with MLS Galaxy President of Business Operations TOM PAYNE, who talked to Staff Writer Jessica Collins about his weekend routines.

Q: Do you have a weekend routine and if so, what does it consist of?

Payne: Many weekends I will go to a movie on Friday night. It seems to be the one place and avenue in which I can decompress from a long and stressful work week. I will generally get home from work, have a bite to eat and then head off to a movie. If we have a game on Saturday, I generally will get up mid-morning, and walk into town for breakfast. I then will run some simple errands and get a workout in before heading to the stadium in the early afternoon. Sunday is generally a day of rest and getting ready for the work week, so I will get some things done around the house, do some shopping maybe or catch up with friends. I definitely will catch up on my sports at some point and then will go out to dinner on Sunday evening before heading home and getting in some work to prepare myself for the week ahead. If it is football season, I will absolutely make sure to watch my N.Y. Giants play, as they make another Super Bowl run. You can find me watching New York sports quite often over the weekend. My teams are the Mets, Giants and Rangers in particular. A perfect weekend would find me at a concert at one of the many great music venues in Los Angeles.

Q: What is a must-read on the weekend and why?

Payne: I generally read several newspapers per day so I will do that. I have found a place near my house where I can buy the N.Y. papers and I will try and do that as well as the local papers here in L.A. Although I haven’t lived in the N.Y. area in over 20 years, I still am a true New Yorker and follow my teams closely and always like to be kept up to speed on what is going on there. I am a big music fan and when not buying CD’s I often am reading up on what is going on in the music world from the older rock and roll heroes of mine, to the younger bands. I also have several books going at a time and they have a wide range from the JAMES PATTERSON series to RODDY DOYLE. I am currently reading “Fever Pitch” by NICK HORNBY again. It’s a fantastic read.

Q: My weekend exercise routine consists of ...

Payne: I try and get a workout in on both weekend days and then at least a couple of times during the week. On Saturday I may use the stationary bike or elliptical in my house and then on Sunday I would go for a run through the town I live in and along the beach.

Q: On the weekend I enjoy watching ...

Payne: I have to admit that I watch sports a lot more than anything else. It is very rare that I will watch a movie in the house or anything like that. When I watch movies, it is almost always at the theater. Most weekends you can find me watching soccer of course (MLS and some of the international games), and really all sports.

Q: What activities or sports do you participate in over the weekend?

Payne: I will golf every once in a while if time permits but those weekends are few and far between. Most of my sports participation these days is based around trying to fit workouts in and the odd game of soccer with our staff here at the Galaxy.
