Williams Praised For His Sound
Judgment, Quiet Leadership |
Bengals investor and former Reds Owner WILLIAM WILLIAMS died Sunday at the age of 93, according to David Holthaus of the CINCINNATI ENQUIRER. Williams in '66 was part of a group that purchased the Reds, and he "continued as one of the club's principal owners" until '85. Williams "presided over the glory years of the Big Red Machine" before selling the team to MARGE SCHOTT. Williams' sons, WILLIAM JOSEPH JR. and THOMAS, serve as Reds Chair and Reds Vice Chair & Treasurer, respectively, while his grandson DICK WILLIAMS is Reds VP/Baseball Operations. MLB Commissioner BUD SELIG said in a statement Williams' "sound judgment and quiet, determined leadership have left a considerable legacy not only with the ballclub and with Major League Baseball, but throughout the city he loved." Meanwhile, Williams was a founding investor of the Bengals in '68, and Bengals Owner MIKE BROWN said Williams "played a significant role with the team while we got under way." Brown: "He was a man of complete integrity. I trusted and admired him" (CINCINNATI ENQUIRER, 8/24). Williams became Reds Managing General Partner in '80, then General Partner from '82-84 before the team was sold to Schott in '85 (MLB.com, 8/24).
