Andretti Green Racing Co-Owner Michael Andretti Confirms Split

Andretti (c) Will Handle AGR's Racing Team,
While Green, Savoree Handle AGR Promotions
Andretti Green Racing (AGR) co-Owner & Chair Michael Andretti Thursday "confirmed a split" with co-Owners Kim Green and Kevin Savoree, according to Curt Cavin of the INDIANAPOLIS STAR. Green and Savoree "will own and operate the organization's promotional company," Andretti Green Promotions (AGP). AGP "organizes and promotes IndyCar Series races" in St. Petersburg, Florida, and Toronto, and is "looking for more." Andretti said that Green and Savoree "will have no direct role with the race team." Andretti said AGP is "going to be their baby, and the race team is going to be my baby." Andretti: "The reason we're doing it is, this thing is getting to be too big and too much. It was distracting both sides." Andretti said that the companies "will be renamed after the season." He now expects AGR CMO John Lopes to "take a larger role leading the business side of the race team." Cavin notes Andretti "plans to maintain a four-car IndyCar Series team," and Andretti said that he "expects to retain" driver Danica Patrick. An announcement on Patrick's contract, which expires after this season, "could come as early as next week." Patrick's car sponsor, Motorola, is based in Schaumburg, Illinois, near Chicagoland Speedway, where the IndyCar Series will race next weekend (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 8/21).

IN THE DRIVER'S SEAT: ESPN.com's John Oreovicz wrote of the possibility of Patrick moving to NASCAR, "Why would Danica ... potentially blunt the upward trajectory of her career by attempting a form of motorsport that has humbled championship-caliber open-wheel talent from Sam Hornish Jr. to Dario Franchitti to Juan Pablo Montoya? The marketing folks would have you believe it's the best place for Danica and her brand. Not to mention the spending habits of her faithful legion of fans." It is "hard to see how Danica the business or Danica the brand would fail in the NASCAR world." Patrick is the "only Indy car driver who does any serious business selling T-shirts and trinkets, and NASCAR Nation likely would welcome her enthusiastically with their wallets." The "pure NASCAR path would be the richest one for Danica," but it is "difficult to imagine Danica the driver succeeding in the NASCAR environment." Oreovicz wondered, "How long will Patrick's fans remain loyal if she's running 38th in the Cup Series?" (ESPN.com, 8/20).

ROAD WORK AHEAD: The INDIANAPOLIS STAR's Cavin writes IRL driver Scott Dixon is "in contract negotiations" with Target Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) "based on the way he answered a series of questions regarding his possible availability to other teams in 2010." Dixon said his current contract "was like a three-year, but what we're working on, who knows?" Former IndyCar driver Gil de Ferran has said that he would "like to have Dixon for a team he hopes to start for next season" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 8/21).
