Blazers Launch Season-Long Campaign To Honor 40th Anniversary

The Trail Blazers Monday tipped off their "Cheers to 40 Years" campaign, which will run throughout the '09-10 NBA season. The campaign celebrates the team's 40th anniversary and will feature tributes to people and events that have left a mark on the franchise. Four games during the season will pay homage to each of the four decades in Trail Blazers history, and commemorative anniversary merchandise will be available to fans online and in the Trail Blazers Fan Shop at the Rose Quarter (Trail Blazers). In Portland, Jason Quick reported the upcoming season for the Trail Blazers will feature "new jerseys, special visits from former players and coaches, and even a guest radio appearance by broadcaster Bill Schonely during a preseason game." The first "Cheers to 40 Years" event will take place October 14, when the Trail Blazers host the Suns for an exhibition game at their original arena, Memorial Coliseum. All tickets for the game will cost $19.70, representing the year of the team's first season. Meanwhile, the Trail Blazers will wear "special alternate uniforms" for each of the four decade games during the season. In two of the games, the team will "wear uniforms like those of the 1976-1977 NBA championship team, with the team name vertically stretched down the right side of the jersey." The other two games will feature "newly designed jerseys that say 'rip city' on the front, playing off the catchphrase coined by Schonely during the first season." Commemorative merchandise will include a "coffee-table style book that will be released near the season's end" (Portland OREGONIAN, 8/18).
