Golf Channel Moves Portion Of Live Solheim Cup Coverage Online

Golf Channel will move a portion of its live first-round coverage of the biennial Solheim Cup to GolfChannel.com next Friday, marking the first time the site has streamed live coverage of an LPGA tournament. The cable channel is airing all three rounds of the Ryder Cup-style women’s team event, including a 10-1/2 hour block on Friday, but two hours of coverage on Friday will move to the Web because of contractual obligations to air at least two hours of the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship. Golf Channel was scheduled to air three hours of the PGA Tour event on Friday and added one hour to Thursday’s first-round coverage to compensate for the change. Word of the move, which will be announced later today, renewed concerns among LPGA tournaments about the pecking order of the various tours on Golf Channel, but a network spokesperson said the Solheim Cup streaming was not a precursor of programming models under their new TV deal that starts in '10. When the LPGA and Golf Channel in February announced their new cable deal, LPGA tournament directors worried about programming windows given the available slots on the network, which airs live golf Thursday through Sunday on the PGA, Nationwide, Champions and European tours. “The particulars related to the coverage of this event have absolutely no bearing on our coverage plans for regular season LPGA events in 2010 and beyond,” said Golf Channel Managing Dir of PR Dan Higgins.
