King Receives Presidential Medal
Of Freedom At The White House
In DC, Liz Clarke profiles Int'l Tennis HOFer BILLIE JEAN KING, who yesterday was one of 16 "pioneering women and men in fields ranging from the arts and sciences to clergy and politics to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation's highest civilian honor, in ceremonies at the White House." PRESIDENT OBAMA said of King, "We honor what she calls 'all the off-the-court stuff' -- what she did to broaden the reach of the game, to change how women athletes and women everywhere view themselves, and to give everyone, regardless of gender or sexual orientation -- including my two daughters -- a chance to compete both on the court and in life." Many of King's "loved ones shared the day with her, including her partner, ILANA KLOSS, and Kloss's mother" (WASHINGTON POST, 8/13). CBS' John Blackstone noted King "pushed for equal pay" in tennis tournaments and "was a driving force in getting" Title IX passed ("The Early Show," CBS, 8/13).

COMING SOON: DAILY VARIETY's Michael Fleming reports Columbia Pictures and Happy Madison have "acquired an untitled script by JOHNATHON SCHAECH, JOSH WOLF and RICHARD CHIZMAR that comedically explores an incident in the life of" former MLBer RICK DEMPSEY, "whose Little League coach turned out to be a bank robber." NAMES: The SEC said that it "wouldn't file an amended complaint alleging insider-trading charges against" Mavericks Owner Mark Cuban's trading of stock in Mamma.com, though it "asked the judge to close the case so that it could consider an appeal" (WSJ.com, 8/12)....Philadelphia Daily News NBA writer PHIL JASNER has been selected to the Temple School of Communications & Theater's HOF, and will be inducted on October 20. Jasner has covered the 76ers and the NBA for the paper "on a full-time basis since 1981 and has been a member of the sports staff since 1972" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 8/13)....English soccer club Newcastle United Owner MIKE ASHLEY and U.K. businessman BARRY MOAT, who are "in negotiations about Moat's prospective takeover of Newcastle," are "on the guest list for a charity lunch to be held Saturday at St. James' Park." Both Ashley and Moat have indicated that they will attend. IN MEMORY: Former NYRA Dir of Radio & Television BILL JOHNSON died Friday at the age of 76. Johnson "founded and started publishing the annual magazine 'Saratoga Summer'" (DAILYGAZETTE.com, 8/12).
