NHL Teams Working With RSNs To Sell Virtual Ads Next Season

Avalanche, Devils, Islanders, Rangers Among
Teams Looking To Sell Virtual Ads Next Season
At least four NHL clubs are "working with their regional sports networks to sell virtual ads next season," including the Avalanche, Devils, Islanders and Rangers, according to Michael McCarthy of USA TODAY. Altitude Sports & Entertainment Senior VP/Marketing & Sales Tom Philand, whose network airs Avalanche games, said that with viewers "flipping channels, marketers want to stick their messages 'inside the games,' rather than around them during commercials." MSG Networks Exec VP & GM Dan Ronayne said that MSG and the Rangers "got only a 'handful of complaints' after placing virtual ads for Subway, New York Life and iO TV on the glass behind the goalies in several game telecasts last season." McCarthy notes MLB has used virtual signs "behind home plate on Fox and ESPN telecasts" since the '01 World Series, and NBA officials said that they have been "closely monitoring the technical developments in virtual advertising for some time but have no current plans to use it." Meanwhile, the NFL is "not interested" (USA TODAY, 8/13).
