Dan Rooney Adjusting To Life In Ireland Away From Steelers

NFL Network Profiles Steelers
Chair Emeritus Dan Rooney
NFL Network's “NFL Total Access” last night profiled Steelers Chair Emeritus DAN ROONEY and his life since being named U.S. Ambassador to Ireland by PRESIDENT OBAMA. NFL Network’s Fran Charles reported upon Rooney’s arrival in Ireland, he met with the Irish media but "none of them seemed curious about the Steelers' chances of repeating." Rooney: "They were all just really happy. They said, 'Welcome to Ireland.'"
Charles noted Rooney’s life for the next three years will involve “shaking hands, listening to the issues and keeping the peace. Way down on that list are his beloved Steelers." Rooney: “The only times I have ever lived out of Pittsburgh was when I went to go to the Steelers training camp. It’ll be an adjustment.” Rooney said of the Irish people's understanding of American football, “The thing that troubles them mostly is the delay. They don’t understand why the stoppage. … I said, 'American football is a strategy game.' They do not understand that.” He said he has “enjoyed the hurling games” since being in Ireland. Rooney: "That’s one sport that I would go to when I can." Rooney “will be working full time,” and Regional Public Diplomacy Officer JONATHAN BERGER said since Rooney arrived in the country, he “has just taken it all in.” Berger: “It's been an overwhelming amount of stuff to do and he has just handled it with grace and a smile on his face." Charles noted while Rooney will “be unable to make it home for all but a few Steelers games … he insists he will be making the trip back to the States for the Super Bowl” should the team make the game in Miami (“NFL Total Access,” NFL Network, 8/11).

EARNINGS REPORT: The Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW reports Rooney earned $2.2M in base salary "in the past year and a half," and he also will earn another $3.1M "from other family interests and three severance payments." Rooney reported $1.2M in income from Rooney Enterprises and "more than $900,000 from his interest" in the Palm Beach Kennel Club. Rooney was "required to file a detailed financial disclosure report with government ethics officials" ahead of his ambassadorship (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 8/12).
