Zenyatta-Rachel Alexandra Race Not Likely Pre-Breeders' Cup

Shirreffs Says Perfect Place For Zenyatta,
Rachel Alexandra To Meet Is Breeders' Cup
Zenyatta trainer John Shirreffs yesterday "quickly doused a proposed match between" the horse and Rachel Alexandra, according to Jerry Bossert of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Gallery Furniture Owner Jim McIngvale was "hoping to get the two together" at Sam Houston Race Park on October 3, with the winner receiving $1.2M and the loser $800,000. But Shirreffs said the "perfect spot for Rachel and Zenyatta to meet up is the Breeders' Cup" on November 7. Shirreffs said of Rachel Alexandra co-Owner Jess Jackson, "I hope he'll bring her to the Breeders' Cup because that's what it was designed for." Shirreffs said that Zenyatta "could start again after the Breeders' Cup, possibly to face Rachel Alexandra, over a dirt track" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 8/12). McIngvale: "We're flexible on the date. It's not in stone. Maybe they'd be more interested in racing after the Breeders' Cup. That would be fine with me. The important thing is that we have this race in Houston." McIngvale added that he has "not spoken with either" Zenyatta Owner Jerry Moss or Jackson, though he "did learn through a mutual acquaintance that Rachel Alexandra's trainer, Steve Asmussen, was 'very interested' in a Houston match race" (HOUSTON CHRONICLE, 8/12).
