NFL Franchise Notes: Economy Not Affecting Patriots Ticket Sales

Kraft Says Patriots Have Over 50,000
People On Season-Ticket Waiting List
Patriots Owner Bob Kraft said that the team "hasn't felt the pinch in ticket sales" this offseason, and indicated that the fan base "hasn't downsized, even in the midst of a recession." Kraft: "The fans have supported us. ... We have over 50,000 people on a paid (season ticket) waiting list." However, Kraft said the team is "coming into unchartered waters with the expiration of the labor agreement after next year" (BOSTON HERALD, 8/9). Meanwhile, former NFLer Tebucky Jones last week filed a lawsuit claiming Patriots teams doctors "failed to diagnose his career-ending 2006 preseason knee injury, effectively ruining his pro career." The Patriots, who paid Jones $275,000 to "resolve a union grievance over his injury and the early release from his contract," are not named in the suit (BOSTON HERALD, 8/9).

THAT'S THE SPIRIT: In St. Louis, Jeff Gordon wrote while Rams fans "may still fret about the franchise's uncertain future, they have no beef with how the owners-for-now are running things today." The offseason "brought a complete overhaul" to the organization, including making the "necessary moves to clear cap space." Improvements at Edward Jones Dome are "ongoing," and the "new game day staff is planning dramatic improvements in atmosphere" this season. The team's staff at training camp is doing a "terrific job accommodating fans, sponsors and Friends of the Franchise without compromising the business-first tone of practice." Rams co-Owner Chip Rosenbloom "wants to do right by St. Louis." Whether he "accomplishes that with the sale of the franchise remains to be seen," but "in the meantime you can see that he cares" (STLTODAY.com, 8/7).

EDIT YOUR MISTAKES: In Boston, Mike Reiss reported the Colts this year "took the unusual step of prohibiting reporters covering the initial training camp practices from bringing notebooks," apparently fearing that "reporters would provide too much detail if they were scribbling notes." But "realizing they had taken things a bit too far -- at practices that are open to the public -- the Colts ultimately relented" (BOSTON GLOBE, 8/9).
