Bridgestone Extends Title Sponsorship Of WGC Event Through '14

Bridgestone Invitational Will Stay At Firestone
Country Club In Akron Through '14
Bridgestone and the PGA Tour yesterday announced they have reached an agreement in principle to extend the company's title sponsorship of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational through '14. The previous five-year deal was set to expire after next year's event. Bridgestone also reached an agreement with Firestone Country Club to continue hosting the tournament through '14 as well. In addition, Bridgestone entered into a five-year marketing partnership that extends its designation as the Official Tire of the PGA and Champions tours. Bridgestone plans to support its partnership through a marketing campaign that includes ads on PGA Tour telecasts and PGATour.com (THE DAILY). Bridgestone Americas CEO Mark Emkes said, "We all know that the global economy is pretty rough out there right now, so we're proud to be able to extend this relationship and provide a little stimulus to this local economy and we're thrilled because this is a world class event that provides incredibly great exposure for the Bridgestone and Firestone brands." PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem added, "To see companies now thinking ahead instead of backwards is very positive and making decisions for the next five or six years and recognizing that there's real value in PGA Tour golf. That's very comforting" ("WGC Bridgestone Invitational," CBS, 8/9). Finchem added, "For Bridgestone to make this commitment in a down economy speaks a lot about the value of PGA Tour golf and International Federation for PGA Tour golf” (“Golf Central,” Golf Channel, 8/9).

BIG WHEELS KEEP ON TURNING: Emkes yesterday said, "We've had to be, like all companies, very lean and strategic during this economic downturn, and there's been some things we've cut out. But stuff that's been successful like the Bridgestone Invitational, working with a class organization like the PGA Tour, our association with the NFL and the NHL, those things have worked for us." Emkes added, "Even in a down economy, we still need to sell Bridgestone golf balls, Bridgestone clubs, Bridgestone tires, Firestone tires and think that this venue is just an excellent chance to not only show our brands in the United States, but also on an international stage" (N.Y. TIMES, 8/10). Tiger Woods, who yesterday captured his seventh victory in the event, said, "We're very lucky that we have most of our sponsors locked in through probably '12, and we have the next round of TV negotiations coming up soon. Hopefully, the economy will turn around so that we'll have a better opportunity of continuing what we have on the tour" (Cleveland PLAIN DEALER, 8/10).
