Little Caesars Could Take Over Motor City Bowl Title Sponsorship

Perles Says Motor City Bowl
Title Will Be Changed
Motor City Bowl co-Founder & CEO George Perles yesterday indicated the game is in talks with Little Caesars Pizza to take over title sponsorship, according to Tim Skubick of WWJ-AM. Perles said that the title of the game "will be changed because of the troubles in the auto industry," and that an "official announcement is expected in a couple weeks." The Little Caesars BOD is "expected to vote on a possible sponsorship later this week." Perles joked, "We're gonna be probably known as the Little Caesar's Pizza, Pizza Bowl" (WWJ.com, 8/3). In Detroit, Mark Snyder notes the name Perles mentioned is "highly unlikely, considering the company no longer uses that slogan in its U.S. advertising." In the "worst-case scenario," the game "could proceed without a title sponsor." Motor City Bowl Exec Dir Ken Hoffman: "There are bowls in the Football Bowl Association structure that have put on a game without a title sponsor, and we could do it. But I'm pretty confident in the people we're talking with" (DETROIT FREE PRESS, 8/4). Also in Detroit, Eric Lacy writes Little Caesars is a "viable option because Metro Detroit's down economy has made it tougher to attract and retain sponsors." GM is "not expected to renew its sponsorship with the game because of its recent financial woes," and bowl officials "expect to know within the next two months if they can retain Ford and the Michigan Regional Council of Carpenters and Millwrights, who sponsored the game last year." Chrysler "pulled out of a sponsorship agreement last year and was replaced with the union" (DETROIT NEWS, 8/4).
