Facility Notes

In Milwaukee, Don Walker noted the outfield wall near the visitors' bullpen at Miller Park usually has a "large sign for Potawatomi Bingo and Casino," but during last weekend's Braves-Brewers series the "large sign was covered in plastic wrap." There is a "sense that the Potawatomis find a team named the Braves offensive," and the tribe "likely asked the Brewers to cover up the sign." A source said that the "effort to cover up the Potawatomi sign is not new" (JSONLINE.com, 7/28).

THINK ABOUT IT: In New Jersey, Hugh Morley reported the Meadowlands Regional Chamber of Commerce has "created a think tank to study the economic future of the region." The council "will meet three or four times a year and will focus on three key areas." One of the areas that will be discussed is the "economic impact of the Meadowlands Sports Complex, including the need to head off discussion of closing the Izod arena, and the best way the area can benefit from the opening of Xanadu" and the Giants' and Jets' new stadium (Bergen RECORD, 7/28).

Fitzgerald Has Some Reservations About
Northwestern Playing A Game At Wrigley Field
DEFENSIVE STANCE: In Chicago, Herb Gould notes Northwestern Univ. football coach Pat Fitzgerald "understands the appeal" of having his team play a game at Wrigley Field, but he has "some understandable reservations, especially when it comes to sharing the stage" with the Univ. of Illinois. Fitzgerald: "I fully embrace the idea and the thought. But am I sold on who and when? Not yet." Gould notes the "main catch" is that the discussion centers around Northwestern giving up a home game, "most likely their 2010 meeting with Illinois" (CHICAGO SUN-TIMES, 7/29).

ROLLING THUNDER: In Oklahoma City, Mike Baldwin reports city officials yesterday "received 11 sealed bids for the construction" of the Thunder's new practice facility. Oklahoma City Manager Jim Couch indicated that Atlas Construction "was the low bid" with $10.1M, "far below the city's estimated" $15M cost. Atlas' bid "must still be approved by the City Council at a meeting in August" (DAILY OKLAHOMAN, 7/29).
