Mets Players Help Unveil Players Choice
Signature Series Line Of Merchandise |
The MLBPA, Aramark, Majestic Athletic and Twins Enterprise yesterday unveiled its new Players Choice Signature Series line of merchandise designed by six Mets players, with the gear now on sale at the Players Clubhouse Store at Citi Field and on MLB.com. The player-designed jerseys, hats and T-shirts -- involving Ps J.J. Putz, John Maine, and Bobby Parnell, OFs Gary Sheffield and Daniel Murphy and C Omir Santos -- predictably varied widely based on their personal interests and backgrounds. Murphy’s line, for example, heavily involved green to reflect his Irish heritage, while Parnell used a firefighter motif for his T-shirt given that several members of his family have worked for fire departments. Santos incorporated the flag from his native Puerto Rico. “This has been a fun project for everybody involved, and it’s something we’re continuing to get calls on from other teams and other players [beyond the Mets],” said MLBPA Dir of Business Affairs & Licensing Judy Heeter. “We definitely see this as additive to the standard lines of merchandise we currently offer.” No expansion of the effort to other teams is planned until at least '10, she said. Sheffield’s line, meanwhile, in part features photos of him embedded within the numbers on the back of the shirts and jerseys -- a design element that MLBPA licensing officials also may expand next year. “It’s a great look that we really think will translate well to the regular in-line program for name-and-number product,” said MLBPA Dir of Retail Development Nancy Willis. “I’m sort of wondering why we didn’t think of it sooner, but it’s a great idea.” Price points for the Players Choice Signature Series are similar to other licensed MLB merchandise, with hats and T-shirts costing $25, and jerseys priced at $109.99. The new gear currently is featured within an entire wall at the Clubhouse Store at Citi Field.
