Wheels & Deals: Yates Racing Plans To Have Two Cars For '10

Paul Menard, Menards Sponsorship Plan To
Return To No. 98 Yates Racing Ford In '10
Yates Racing co-Owner & GM Max Jones Sunday said that the NASCAR Sprint Cup team "plans to be back up to at least two cars next season, with Paul Menard and the Menards sponsorship returning to the No. 98 Yates Racing Ford in 2010." SPEEDTV.com's Tom Jensen noted the team earlier this year "shuttered its No. 28 Ford driven by Travis Kvapil for lack of sponsorship." Yates currently operates the No. 96 HOF Racing operation. Jones said that he is "unsure if Yates would campaign the HOF car again in 2010." Jones: "Normally these (sponsorship) deals come together in August, but the Hall of Fame deal didn't come together until the week between Christmas and New Year's last year, and we might be looking at the same kind of thing this year" (SPEEDTV.com, 7/26).

PIT STOP: Toyota Racing Development President & GM Lee White said that Toyota cut about 20% from its operating budget, but was "able to absorb the cuts internally without affecting existing deals with its Cup teams." White: "I think every manufacturer is going to approach it exactly the same with more contingency (payments), based on performance, rather than direct support. The key is to associate with the right teams, the right drivers, and ride their coattails." Meanwhile, Ford Racing Technology Dir Brian Wolfe said that the manufacturer's racing budget was "slashed by 35[%] before the season." Wolfe: "We knew this year would be tough. Next year, too, and then we'll start to rise out of it. When you put together a five-year plan, you can't just turn it on and off" (INDIANAPOLIS STAR, 7/26).

Renault F1 Team's Costs Increase 38%
To A Record $260M In '08
WRONG FORMULA: In London, Sylt & Reid noted the Renault F1 team's after-tax losses "more than doubled last year" to US$17M as its costs increased 38% to US$260M -- "the highest ever on record for any outfit in the sport." The accounts, which ended December 31, 2008, "show that turnover increased" 33% to US$244M "on the back of new sponsorship deals." To "compensate for the team's increased costs, the accounts state that the direct financial contribution from the Renault car company also rose" (TELEGRAPH.co.uk, 7/25).

NOTES: Red Bull Racing GM Jay Frye said that he "will make a trip to Austria to meet Red Bull management in the next week or two to help finalize two decisions -- a contract extension for driver Brian Vickers and a possible change in manufacturer for the 2010 season" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 7/26)....NASCAR driver Kyle Busch said that he would "like to own a Nationwide or Truck series team in the future but knows it's not the best of times for such a move considering the economy and the state of car manufacturers" (CHARLOTTE OBSERVER, 7/26).
