Asia, Not U.S., Remains Target Of ManU's Overseas Efforts

ManU Likely To Return To Asia Soon
EPL club Manchester United's 10-day tour of Asia ended Sunday, but there is "no doubt that United will be back in Asia before too long," according to Mark Ogden of the London TELEGRAPH. The U.S. and the club "would appear to be the perfect fit" since the team is owned by the Glazer family. But ManU, "while enjoying some brand recognition, do not stop the traffic in New York, Dallas or Chicago." And though ManU players "love trips to the States simply because they can enjoy relative anonymity," the players also "enjoy the passion and enthusiasm of supporters in Asia." ManU officials have "learned that Asia is where the club has to be," as the region "matters enormously to the club and their popularity across the Far East enables senior figures to strike the lucrative sponsorship deals that are the envy of their Premier League rivals." Ogden noted Aon's four-year, $30-32M per-year deal to serve as ManU's jersey sponsor is "largely down to the club's standing in Asia," as China, India and Japan all "matter to Aon and sponsoring United will help propel the company into the consciousness of the region." Asia is "where the money is," and if ManU were to tour the U.S., "their value to Aon would be greatly diminished." Plans are "already afoot to return to Asia" in '11. Ogden noted Vietnam is "desperate to host a fixture involving United," while several cities in India are also "pitching for a United visit and Australia is another possibility, with Sydney, Melbourne and Perth aiming to cash in with a United game" (London TELEGRAPH, 7/27).
