Colts To Air Home Games In Spanish In Attempt To Reach Hispanics

Colts Will Air All Home Games In Spanish This
Season In Attempt To Reach Hispanic Community
All 10 Colts home games this season "will air in Spanish on locally owned" WSYW-AM and WEDJ-FM, and the team sees a "big opportunity for growth in Indianapolis' Hispanic community," according to HISPANIC MARKET WEEKLY. Armando Quintero, who served as the team's Spanish play-by-play announcer during the '03 and '04 seasons, will return to that role. The team in '04 "stopped its Spanish-language broadcasts," and Quintero "moved on, becoming the game-day commentator for CBS Radio Sports/Westwood One's Spanish-language NFL coverage." Colts Senior VP/Sales & Marketing Tom Zupancic said the team was "a little bit ahead of the curve." Zupancic: "We were ready. We had Armando, who is an excellent spokesman for the Hispanic community. But we made some assumptions and errors in judgment." Zupancic also said that the Colts "thought the advertisers were ready for Spanish-language team broadcasts." Zupancic: "But they didn't know how -- and they had no budget for it." But Compelling Content Founder Mark Clark, whose company is focused "solely on selling the Colts' Spanish-language broadcasts," said that now "his phone has been ringing off the hook, with Regions Bank and Burger King actively negotiating for advertising opportunities." Clark added he is 100% confident "we will have the season sold out by August 14." Meanwhile, Zupancic sees the presence of Colts WR Anthony Gonzalez as "highly valuable both on and off the field" (HISPANIC MARKET WEEKLY, 7/24 issue).
