Padres Lay Off Front-Office Employees As Part Of Reorganization
The Padres Thursday laid off 13 front-office employees, "none of them in baseball operations," in what Padres Vice Chair & CEO Jeff Moorad said was the "first step in the reorganization in the business side" of the organization, according to Chris Jenkins of the SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE. The Padres did not announce the names of the affected employees, but sources said that among those let go were Exec VP/Business Operations Jeff Overton, VP/Sales Jim Ballweg and VP/Community Relations Michele Anderson. Sources said that directors of marketing, corporate communications and business public relations were "also laid off." Moorad: "We needed a greater focus, more tunnel-vision focus on revenue. To be fair, the national economy has had an impact and made it more challenging." Moorad added that the team "will 'hire back in terms of need,' likely creating more than 20 front-office jobs over the next several months." Jenkins notes through 50 homes games at Petco Park so far this season, the Padres have "drawn the 14 smallest crowds" in the ballpark's history. With an average crowd of "around 24,000, the Padres are on pace to draw under 2 million fans for the first time since the strike-shortened 1995 season." The Padres have "never finished below 2.4 million since Petco Park opened" in '04. Jenkins writes "ticket sales and performance in business partnerships figured into the moves" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 7/24).
