Arlington Buildings Could Be Transformed Into Giant Billboards

Arlington Might Allow Building Wraps
During Major Sporting Events
Some high-rise buildings in Arlington's entertainment district "could be transformed into giant billboards touting the NBA All-Star Game, the Super Bowl and other major sporting events planned for Cowboys Stadium," according to Susan Schrock of the FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM. The Arlington City Council next month "will consider amending a city ordinance to allow building wraps, which are advertisements made of thin vinyl that stick to the face of buildings." City officials said that the Mavericks and the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee have "approached the city about allowing the temporary signs for the Feb. 14 All-Star Game and the 2011 Super Bowl." Arlington Deputy City Manager Trey Yelverton: "Should we proceed, it would be limited to a concentrated area for a concentrated time to celebrate a national event that is occurring in our community." Building owners that "agreed to the wraps would be paid a fee." Yelverton said that city buildings are "not expected to be selected." Arlington Mayor Robert Cluck said that he is "comfortable with the temporary advertising." Cluck: "Having looked at how they do it, it's simple to put up and take down. It just increases the enthusiasm for the event. I think there are buildings that would look great with the wraps" (FT. WORTH STAR-TELEGRAM, 7/18).
