ManU Hopes To Enhance Strong Asia Presence During Far East Tour

Manchester United Claims They Have
80 Million Supporters In Asia
Progress on the field is "only one factor of the money-spinning" Far East tour by EPL club Manchester United, according to Mark Ogden of the London TELEGRAPH. ManU in Asia has secured a "series of lucrative sponsorship deals, partnerships and territory-specific agreements that will bring the club huge sums from 14 commercial partners next season," and the club expects to earn US$38.7M more than last season. ManU indicated that "they have 80 million supporters in Asia alone." Ogden noted the club is "making the most of their status in the region," generating an estimated US$9.9M from the tour, which includes games in Malaysia, South Korea and China. ManU CEO David Gill admitted that the "draining trips to the Far East are now crucial to the club's financial strength." Gill: "Our fans in Asia generate money for the club, and the reception United get in Asia is unlike anywhere else on earth." Chicago-based Aon VP/Global PR David Prosperi, whose company last month signed a deal to become ManU's global shirt sponsor, said, "We believe that Asia, particularly India and China, are prime targets for revenue growth and being associated with the Manchester United brand, will, we believe, help us to greatly build our brand and grow our business in this region." Ogden noted South America, with the "emerging economies of Brazil and Venezuela, is next on United's hit list and deals could soon be thrashed out in that untapped region" (TELEGRAPH.co.uk, 7/16).

SECURITY CONCERNS: ManU has cancelled their match scheduled for Monday in Jakarta, Indonesia, following bomb attacks in the city Friday. ManU was "supposed to be flying to Jakarta tomorrow evening and staying at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, one of the terrorists' targets." The club, "after seeking advice from various parties, including the Foreign Office," confirmed that they "would not be flying to Jakarta tomorrow" (TIMESONLINE.co.uk, 7/17).
