Hayward Files Suit Against Relay Worldwide Over Severance Pay

Hayward Files Lawsuit In Hopes Of Obtaining
Severance Payments From Relay
Chicago-based sports and events marketing company Relay Worldwide faces a lawsuit brought by former Chair & CEO WALLY HAYWARD "over his severance pay," according to Ameet Sachdev of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Hayward in a complaint filed Wednesday in Cook County (IL) circuit court said that Relay and its parent Starcom MediaVest Group, part of the Publicis Groupe, "owe him more than $650,000 in severance and bonus payments and employee benefits." Hayward, who left the company in March, "claims that Relay and Starcom breached his employment agreement and also violated Illinois wage laws." An '05 employee agreement indicated that Hayward "earned a $400,000 salary, bonus and other perks." The suit said that Hayward in September "gave the company six months notice of his intention to leave, after he could not work out an agreement with Publicis Groupe to buying all or part of Relay." Publicis in September appointed TIM MAUER as Relay's new CEO. The suit said that Publicis management "told Hayward not to come to work but he would be paid until March." Hayward contends that by "removing him as CEO before he was supposed to leave, he was 'constructively discharged,' which entitled him to severance pay according to employment pact." Publicis and Relay claim that he was "not constructively discharged and thus no severance obligations had been triggered" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 7/11).
