Yahoo Settles Fantasy Football Licensing Lawsuit Against NFLPA

Yahoo Monday dropped its fantasy licensing lawsuit against the NFLPA after reaching a settlement with the players' commercial arm. The online portal last month sued the NFLPA in a Minnesota district court, alleging the union was threatening its own lawsuit unless it was paid fantasy licensing fees for the '09 football season. Yahoo's case was filed in the same court and under similar legal grounds as CBS Interactive's previous, and thus far-successful, legal fight against the NFLPA to assert its right for unlicensed use of names and stats in fantasy football games. The union, however, continues to mount an appeal against CBS in that case. Details of the settlement were not immediately available, and Yahoo's notice to the court Monday only mentioned its intent to voluntarily dismiss its claims in the case. Officials for Yahoo and the union declined comment beyond confirming the settlement and indicating a willingness to work together in the future. Yahoo is one of the largest operators of fantasy football games, with more than 5.5 million players estimated to be registered with the site.
