NFL, NFLPA To Hold Second Formal CBA Bargaining Session On July 14

The NFL and the NFLPA will hold their second formal bargaining session for a new labor deal for players next Tuesday in DC, where the union is headquartered, sources said. The first official bargaining session under NFLPA Exec Dir DeMaurice Smith was held on June 3 in N.Y. Next week's meeting is not expected to produce any news, as both sides have agreed to keep talks confidential, as is common in the early stages of bargaining. The NFL CBA expires in '11. If there is no deal by March, the '10 season will operate without a salary cap (Liz Mullen, SportsBusiness Journal).

Light Believes NFL Is Doing More
Listening Under Goodell
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: In a special to SI.com, Patriots OT Matt Light wrote the NFL is "doing a lot more listening these days" under Commissioner Roger Goodell, as the league is "trying to offer guys the tools to make better decisions off the field, so they can handle the pressure that often comes with a career in pro sports and adapt to life when their playing days are over." The NFL and NFLPA are "providing opportunities for players to gain the knowledge and the training that are the foundation of a post-football career." The Rookie Symposium "teaches players how to handle and protect their finances, stay out of trouble and be aware there are always consequences to their actions." Light: "I'm confident this program has saved more than a few careers." The NFL also offers a Business Management & Entrepreneurial Seminar, run by "top-notch institutions." Light: "I've had the chance to attend three of these classes, and the benefits have been invaluable" (SI.com, 7/7).

SOLID LEADERSHIP: In Portland, John Canzano writes Goodell "has character and a sense of social responsibility." Canzano: "It's the job of the NFL commissioner to uphold the integrity of the league, and to run a healthy business model, and for those reasons I'm convinced he's exactly what sports needs." Goodell is "more connected with regular Americans" than NBA Commissioner David Stern, and he is "less compromised" than MLB Commissioner Bud Selig. Goodell is "busy demonstrating what we should come to expect from the people in prominent positions in business and society -- leadership" (Portland OREGONIAN, 7/8).
