Kobe Discusses Forthcoming "Black Mamba" Watch Collection

Bryant Worried About Selling Luxury
"Black Mamba" Watches In Current Economy
Lakers G Kobe Bryant appeared on Fox Business last night to discuss his relationship with Switzerland-based watchmaker Nubeo and called the creation of his "Black Mamba" watch collection a "challenge." Bryant said, "It was about trying to do something that was different, something that was unique, and us partnering together and then coming up with a signature watch." He added, "You normally see watch companies go to a particular player and ask them to endorse a series of watches. In this case, we actually put our heads together and designed the watch ourselves and made something that was pretty exclusive to us." Bryant said once Nubeo approached him about the partnership, he did his "due diligence into the company, what they wanted to do with the series of watches, and the thing that we shared in common was our attention to detail." Fox Business' David Asman had a box of five Nubeo watches in studio that begin to retail around $60,000, and Bryant said he is "absolutely" worried about selling a luxury item in the current economy. Bryant: "That's something that the company and I discussed in how they wanted to approach it in terms of making it more a collector's item, not expecting it to move an exorbitant amount of units but more having a pinpoint target we're going after" ("America's Nightly Scoreboard," Fox Business, 7/7). In L.A., Baxter Holmes noted the limited-edition watches will "go on sale in the U.S. in the fall." The watches range from $21,000-285,000 (LATIMES.com, 7/7).
