Wheels & Deals: Truex Jr. To Join Michael Waltrip Racing In '10

Truex Jr. To Be Formally Introduced
As MWR's Newest Sprint Cup Driver
ESPN.com's David Newton cited a source as saying that Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR) tomorrow will formally introduce Martin Truex Jr. as the team's newest Sprint Cup driver, starting next season. NAPA, the longtime sponsor of MWR Owner Michael Waltrip, will become Truex' primary sponsor. Waltrip, as expected, will "move from a full-time to part-time schedule," and could remain in his No. 55 entry, with Truex "taking another number, possibly the No. 56." While Truex' contract with Earnhardt Ganassi Racing (EGR) expires after this season, his primary sponsor Bass Pro Shops has "another year left on its contract with EGR." There is speculation that Bass Pro will "either move with Truex or to another team" (ESPN.com, 7/4).

STUCK IN THE GARAGE? In Jacksonville, Dan Coble noted thought suspended NASCAR team owner/driver Jeremy Mayfield has expressed interest in racing this season, it "might be difficult ... without money, and without any real prospects of driving for another team." Gatorade Dir of NASCAR Marketing Ed Shull said, "There's a stigma attached to Jeremy Mayfield, no matter how this turns out. For sponsors, they're looking for someone without even a hint of problems, especially drugs. The last thing anyone needs is to connect drugs and racing." Team Owner Tommy Baldwin added, "There are 45 teams out there fighting for 20 sponsors. Nobody needs that hassle" (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 7/4).

POWER SURGE: IndyCar driver Will Power will return to Penske Racing's No. 12 entry for five races this season, starting with Sunday's IndyCar Series Streets of Toronto, with sponsorship from Penske Truck Rental (Penske). Power competed in both the Indianapolis 500 and the Grand Prix of Long Beach for Penske in the No. 12 car with sponsorship from Verizon (ESPN.com, 7/3). In Indianapolis, Curt Cavin wrote, "I totally expected a sponsor for Power, although you have to wonder why someone would want to put money into a program for five races and no assurance of a future in the series" (INDYSTAR.com, 7/4).

ENGINE TROUBLE: In London, Sylt & Reid report several teams that failed to gain entry to F1's '10 World Championship "have now claimed that during the application process the FIA said it was a 'mandatory' condition they had to buy engines" from Cosworth for their "bid to be accepted." This previously had "not been a condition and several teams that had planned to use other engine manufacturers were rejected." Cosworth said it "in no way, shape or form requested that the FIA make demands on its behalf of potential entries" (London TELEGRAPH, 7/6).
