49ers Front Office Takes A Furlough Of More Than A Week

The 49ers' entire front office is “off on a furlough of a little over a week,” according to Tom FitzGerald of the S.F. CHRONICLE. 49ers Dir of Football PR Bob Lange “confirmed the furlough,” but when asked if any staff members are being paid, said, “We don’t talk about financial issues with the team.” Callers to the team’s HQs have received a taped message stating in part, “This break in operations will allow the team to conserve resources, make uninterrupted progress on our headquarters construction project and give employees a chance to take time off prior to the start of a new season.” At least a “half-dozen other NFL teams have also shut down their front offices,” though it “wasn’t known how many of them have put their staff on furlough.” A league source “expressed surprise that any team would take such a drastic measure with employees whose salaries are not substantial in the first place” (S.F. CHRONICLE, 7/3). In S.F., Gwen Knapp wrote the 49ers “can point to many mitigating factors, including the option for staffers who have ample paid time off to schedule it now and avoid skipping a paycheck.” But at the same time, the Raiders have said that they “won’t do anything of the kind,” and the 49ers “can't afford to be equated with the Raiders, much less compared unfavorably.” The image of the team “still hasn’t completely recovered from the early York years, when petty cost-cutting measures aligned the once-extravagant Niners with Donald Sterling’s Clippers.” The furlough decision “seems more like petty efficiency than progressivism, and it appears costly to some of the most meagerly compensated people in the franchise” (S.F. CHRONICLE, 7/5).
