Petty Claims Chrysler Has Stopped All Support Of NASCAR Team

Petty Claims RPM Talking To All
Manufacturers About Next Season
Richard Petty Motorsports (RPM) co-Owner Richard Petty Friday said that Chrysler is "working on a deal to pay off some of its debt" to the team, according to David Newton of ESPN.com. Petty said of Chrysler's support, "They've stopped everything." However, he added that RPM should "expect some money soon." Petty: "We'll get some money from them. Right now we're in the process of figuring out exactly what they can do to get back to us to see what we can do." Newton noted Petty's comments "increased speculation that RPM may leave Dodge for Toyota" after this season. However, Petty said that the team is "talking to all manufacturers about next season, including Dodge" (ESPN.com, 7/4). In N.Y., Viv Bernstein noted Kasey Kahne's victory at the June 21 Toyota/Save Mart 350 gave Petty his first victory as a team owner since '99, but that it "ended with Petty drinking wine next to a driver wearing a Budweiser uniform might have seemed incongruous given the longstanding Petty family rule never to associate with alcohol sponsorship." However, that tradition has "fallen to the wayside" as the economy "continues to demand compromise and change." A "win is a win, no matter what the sponsor is selling." Roush Fenway Racing President Geoff Smith said, "I believe the number of sponsors needed to keep everybody happy in the garage has almost doubled." Meanwhile, Bernstein noted after an offseason for NASCAR that "included mergers and a reduction in the number of competitive teams, the worst may not be over." Smith: "I don't think the full impact of this economic recession will show up for a couple more years when some of the longer-term contracts shrink up" (N.Y. TIMES, 7/5).

FEELING THE EFFECTS: In Daytona Beach, Ken Willis noted "all forms of North American auto racing are feeling the squeeze from the current status of the automobile industry -- or what's left of it." In the past, "Detroit's woes and/or whims have adversely affected NASCAR," but due to the sport's "staggering growth over the past decade-plus, never before have so many people been dependent on a healthy racing game" (Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL, 7/5).
