Woods Says He Is Proud Of
His Foundation Helping Kids |
Golfer Tiger Woods took on Pro Football HOFer Jim Brown "in his own, understated way Tuesday, rebutting the football great's criticism that Woods is 'terrible' on social issues," according to Hank Gola of the N.Y. DAILY NEWS. Woods referred to his Tiger Woods Foundation and said, "I think I do a pretty good job as it is, what we're trying to do with the Foundation ... how many kids we've helped ... what we're trying to do not just here in the United States, but what my mom's doing in Thailand, all these different things that we've done." Woods said of his foundation, "What we've done so far has been very good, very efficient. ... Learn how to teach others, have confidence in themselves to be able to do all these different things, and have these attributes going forward. That takes time. And I think we've done it right" (N.Y. DAILY NEWS, 7/1). Woods added, "I want to do it right, not just do it. That takes time. You just don't jump into something. You want to do it right. You want to have a plan, and I think what we've done so far has been very efficient. It's taught a lot of kids ... how to lead, learn how to give back, learn how to teach others, have confidence in themselves" (PHILADELPHIA DAILY NEWS, 7/1).
BROWN WAY OFF BASE: In DC, Michael Wilbon defends Woods, calling many of Brown’s remarks against the golfer “dead wrong." Woods has "committed millions of dollars, some of the money raised and some of it donated out of his own pocket, to enriching the lives of kids who couldn't possibly find the help elsewhere." Woods is "too sophisticated a man to get into a public back-and-forth" with Brown. When asked if it is "possible that a conversation with Jim Brown might be productive," Woods said, "That depends on whether both parties show up open minded." Wilbon: "One would hope that actual facts will open Brown's mind to the efforts of a young man who doesn't share the same personal history, but shares the belief that actions speak louder than words" (WASHINGTON POST, 7/1). ESPN Radio's Mike Greenberg: "The world that Jim Brown lived most of his life in is different than the one Tiger Woods lives his life in and so I think that's where the disconnect is" ("Mike & Mike in the Morning," ESPN2, 7/1).
