Sen. Charles Schumer Announces Support For Lighthouse Project

U.S. Sen. Schumer Throws Support Behind
Islanders' Lighthouse Development
U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer (D-NY) yesterday announced his "total support" for Islanders Owner Charles Wang's Lighthouse Project, saying that Long Island "needs this to make it a destination and to keep young people on the Island," according to Eden Laikin of NEWSDAY. Schumer said that he "will seek federal transportation funds to improve the roadways around the site, including road widening and reconfiguring parkway exit ramps to ease traffic congestion." Schumer said that he will "do everything he can at the federal level to 'see this project gets up and running and is completed as soon as possible.'" Schumer: "The Lighthouse Project is the economic future of Nassau County. ... I have high hopes for this new hip downtown to attract young people." Schumer added, "We need to get the Lighthouse done. It's a win win win for Nassau County" (NEWSDAY, 6/30). On Long Island, Joye Brown notes Schumer at a news conference to discuss the project yesterday was joined by Nassau County Exec Thomas Suozzi and Town of Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray, meaning for the “first time in many years, representatives of three layers of government stood shoulder to shoulder supporting the idea.” It is the “closest Nassau’s ever been to opening day” (NEWSDAY, 6/30).
