Cox To Begin In-Market Streaming
Of Padres Games In July |
Cox Communications, the Padres and MLBAM yesterday formally announced a deal that will allow Cox’ broadband subscribers to purchase an online package of live Padres games. MLBAM and Cox will use an authentication process that will allow for live streaming of games anywhere in the Padres TV market. The Padres.tv product, available for $49.95 for the remainder of the season or $19.95 for any 30-day period, will launch with the July 16 Rockies-Padres game (Padres). In San Diego, Jay Posner notes the "majority of people with Cox's High Speed Internet service already have access" to Cox' Channel 4, which airs Padres games. Subscribers to DirecTV, Dish Network and AT&T U-Verse, who are "unable to receive Channel 4, also would not have access to the online telecasts." Time Warner Cable subscribers are "not included in the new deal," but a spokesperson said that the company "'hopes to have a similar agreement in place' if not by the time Cox launches, 'then soon thereafter.'" Padres President & COO Tom Garfinkel said that the team's new management team has "'inherited an agreement that was in place' that gives cable operators exclusivity, 'and we've started having discussions with Cox exclusively about the future'" (SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE, 6/30).
