Daly Ordered To Pay
$272,000 In Legal Expenses |
Florida Circuit Court Judge Hugh Carithers Tuesday ordered golfer John Daly to "pay the nearly $272,000 in legal expenses for his unsuccessful defamation lawsuit" against the Florida Times-Union and parent company Morris Publishing Group, according to Paul Pinkham of the FLORIDA TIMES-UNION. Carithers in March "ruled in favor" of the defendants, and this week ordered Daly to pay for "attorneys fees and expenses after hearing from lawyers for Daly and the newspaper." Carithers said that the expenses "were reasonable." Florida Times-Union Publisher Lucy Talley: "It's really been a lengthy, expensive process, but we're satisfied with the court's decision. We are stubbornly dedicated to protecting the First Amendment." Daly in ’05 sued Morris Publishing, the Times-Union, Jacksonville.com and columnist Mike Freeman after Freeman accused Daly in a column of “smacking women and a thug lifestyle” (FLORIDA TIMES-UNION, 6/26). Freeman, who now works for CBSSports.com, wrote, “Thank you George Gabel, the best lawyer in this history of the world, who went nine-iron to nine-iron with Daly and won (and keeps winning), and thank you Florida Times-Union for the obvious” (CBSSPORTS.com, 6/25).
PLAYING FROM NEW TEES: The PGA Tour and Eurosport Thursday announced that Eurosport has secured the PGA Tour TV rights in the U.K. for the remainder of the '09 season, replacing Setanta, which went into administration earlier this week. Tour events now will be accessible in more than 10 million U.K. homes on British Eurosport and Eurosport 2 via Sky and Virgin Media platforms. Coverage also will be available through a simulcast on the Eurosport Player online subscription service (PGA Tour/Eurosport). Eurosport UK Dir of Broadcast Dave Kerr said that the broadcaster would "bring the live coverage of the tour to a 'wider audience of golf fans'" (MEDIAWEEK.co.uk, 6/26).
