HEAVY METAL: ESPN's coverage of the '09 College World Series averaged a 1.5 cable rating and 1.928 million viewers, making it the highest-rated and most-viewed CWS in the net's history. This year's CWS was up 36% and 37%, respectively, from a 1.1 cable rating and 1.408 million viewers for last year's event on ESPN. For the three LSU-Texas Championship Series telecasts, ESPN averaged a 2.1 cable rating and 2.762 million viewers, making it the highest-rated and most-viewed finals since the tournament expanded to a best-of-three format in '03. LSU-Texas was also up 24% and 26%, respectively, from a 1.7 rating and 2.193 million viewers for the Fresno State-Georgia three-game Championship Series last year (ESPN).

SEVENTH HEAVEN: More than 485,000 Pittsburgh-area viewers watched the June 12 Penguins-Red Wings Stanley Cup Finals Game Seven on WPXI-NBC. The broadcast drew a 42.2 rating in the market -- the "highest local mark for an NHL game since the league began tracking" in '95 (Pittsburgh TRIBUNE-REVIEW, 6/25).

FIGHT CLUB: The live finale of the ninth season of Spike TV's "The Ultimate Fighter" on June 20 drew 663,000 viewers in the men 18-34 demo from 9:00pm-12:00am ET. The fight was the most-viewed program among men 18-34 and men 18-49, peaking at 2.8 million total viewers for the main event featuring Diego Sanchez and Clay Guida (UFC).

N.Y. STATE OF MIND: In Ft. Lauderdale, Tom Jicha noted Sunday's Yankees-Marlins game was the highest-rated program for the day on FS Florida and Sun Sports, drawing a 6.2 local rating, which translated to more than 95,000 HHs (SUN-SENTINEL.com, 6/22).
