Ryan Says There Will Be Public
Meetings, Briefings Before Hearings |
Chicago 2016 Chair Patrick Ryan yesterday held a "series of closed-door meetings" with City Council members to "allay their concerns" about funding issues surrounding the city's bid for the '16 Games, according to Heinzmann & Dardick of the CHICAGO TRIBUNE. Yesterday's meetings came just two days after Ryan "tried to put off public hearings with angry aldermen" about Chicago Mayor Richard Daley last week agreeing to sign the IOC's host city contract without any modifications, a change from his previous plans. Ryan yesterday said, "There will be (public) meetings and there will be briefings before the hearings, so they're fully aware and informed before the hearings. We want to take any mystery out of this, there's no privacy going on, what we're really doing is explaining where we are, why we are where we are." But Chicago Alderman Ricardo Munoz said that he "gleaned no new information." Munoz: "They asked for a little time to put together a package, and then we are going to have public hearings" (CHICAGO TRIBUNE, 6/25). In Chicago, Fran Spielman noted Ryan on Monday said that he needed 45-60 days to line up the $1B of "private insurance policies needed to shield taxpayers from any risk" beyond the $500M already pledged by the City Council. But with "public and political support for the Olympic bid fading fast, Ryan could not afford to wait 45 to 60 days," and he "needed to do something to stop the bleeding." Chicago Alderman Pat O'Connor yesterday said, "There's a lot of anger out there looking for a focal point and the Olympics allow a focal point" (SUNTIMES.com, 6/24).
